Fire Retardant Sheet and Rolls


The UL94 rating specifically covers “plastics,” but the same concepts are applied to rubber parts, which is what we are dealing with. You have to remember that in a product, the plastics and rubbers will usually be the first to burn up and melt. This causes the flame/fire to spread to the rest of your product. At this point, it is very important to have a Fire Retardant rubber to prevent further damage. The UL 94 burn test will provide the answers you are looking for. There are 6 UL94 ratings that cover the best to the worst. Materials classified as 5VA or 5VB are subjected to a flame ignition source approximately 5 times more severe than the flame in tests V-0, V-1, V-2 and HB tests. The 5VA and 5VB tests specimens may NOT drip any flaming particles.

The best materials will self-extinguish, and that can help tremendously when a worst-case scenario occurs. Functionally, this means a flexible plastic or rubber material can only hold a flame when a flame is actively applied to it. The minute a heat source is removed, the product will stop burning. Often times the only thing flammable inside a product is the rubber and plastic material, so if some or all can be converted to flame retardant rubber then the risk of catastrophic burning inside a product can be drastically reduced.

Sherwood Industries Inc. manufactures extruded products made with SantopreneTM Thermoplastic Vulcanizate (TPV) from ExxonMobil. A TPV is also often referred to as a Thermoplastic Rubber (TPR), behaves as rubber but processes like a thermoplastic. This material combines good physical properties and chemical resistance. Our Fire Retardant Certified rubber sheet and profile products can be used in a wide range of applications dealing with extreme heat. We have the capability to wind your order onto 3″ or 6″ PVC cores and cut to the width you would need for your part. Our process is extremely thorough and defined. Our rubber rolls can weigh as much or as little as you’d like. We also offer the ability to wind a specific number of linear feet onto each core so your machinery can operate properly. Each order can be customized with a pattern on one or both sides of the rubber. We offer this for aesthetics and can accommodate your request. With that being said, we have the ability to provide you with whatever width you would like that is up to 51″. Don’t forget, we offer profile designs that are also available to be cut to size and packaged in cardboard boxes and/or shipped on a traditional skid/pallet.

Our Santoprene™ sheet and profile products are designed to meet many certifications and testing. Some of these include, UL Subjects 6703, 6703A, 3730, 1703, QMTT2, QMFZ2, and QMFZ8 for both junction boxes and connectors in photovoltaic (PV) systems. Sheet products are RoHS compliant and provide UL94 flammability classifications of V-1 down to a thickness of 1.5mm and 5VA down to a thickness of 1.8mm. The Flame Retardant Rubber sheet products have an elevated Relative Thermal Index (RTI) of 90oC (194oF) and meet the requirements for suitability for outdoor use with an (f1) rating.
